EcoLogix Group Project for the USDA at the National Arboretum Selected for Presentation at WEFTEC 2005
Annapolis, MD (April 15, 2005)
- EcoLogix Group, a professional services company focused on sustainability planning and creating economic, environmental and social value, is pleased to announce that its stormwater management project at the National Arboretum in Washington, DC has been selected for presentation at the prestigious Water Environment Federation’s 2005 Technical Exhibition and Conference (WEFTEC) to be held October 29 –November 2, 2005 at the Washington Convention Center.
WEFTEC is known as the water quality event each year in the United States. WEFTEC 2005 marks the 78th convening of the conference. Every year, WEFTEC draws thousands of professionals from around the world to learn the latest practices, solutions, cutting-edge technologies, and regulations in the water and wastewater arena. The National Arboretum project, described below, will be presented as part of the session entitled Public Education/Government Affairs/Environmental Management/Systems/Sustainable Water Resources: From Patents to People: Promoting Ourselves to the Public on November 2nd at 11:30am in Room 144C of the Convention Center.
In 2003, EcoLogix was selected by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to plan
and design innovative stormwater solutions for the world famous National Arboretum in Washington, DC.
More than 1000 urbanized acres drain heavily polluted stormwater through the Hickey Run, located on the
National Arboretum grounds, and into the significantly impacted Anacostia River. Considerations of the
Arboretum aesthetics and related issues have stymied action over the past several years despite calls for
action by local residents, environmental groups, politicians, and others. EcoLogix has worked closely with the
USDA, the National Arboretum, and its engineering partner, EarthTech, to develop an innovative solution
worthy of the national profile of the Arboretum and that advances its educational and research missions
while reducing the environmental impacts of the large volume of stormwater. EcoLogix is providing full
project support ranging from project engineering and design to the creation and implementation of a
comprehensive stakeholder process to engage agencies, organizations, community members, and others
in the project. To date, the project has been successful by all measures.
"Selection of the Hickey Run project for presentation at WEFTEC 2005 is extremely gratifying. This project is an excellent demonstration of how a comprehensive approach involving technical innovation and broad stakeholder participation can result in a winning outcome for the operator, the environment and the surrounding communities that is sustainable over time. We’re thrilled with this high-profile opportunity to explain the project for the many water professionals at the conference and, as always, look forward to bringing our approach to other challenging projects around the world," stated Rick Sheckells, a Principal with EcoLogix Group, who is leading up the effort.
